Funding for cooperation between SMEs and universities

Innovative companies in the energy sector who are looking for cooperation with a University or HBO can apply for NWO funding. KIEM is a financial instrument that focuses specifically on cooperation between SMEs and universities/HBO. Within KIEM, NWO, together with SMEs, finances short-term knowledge development projects, including energy innovations. KIEM applications can be submitted continuously up to 8 October 2019.

A KIEM project combines the practical experience of SMEs with the scientific expertise to solve a fundamental problem or to disseminate the knowledge needed to renew a product, process or service. A KIEM grant can also be used for initiatives of startups.

KIEM is one of the public-private partnerships that is funded by the ENW PPP fund. KIEM wants to lower the threshold for SMEs to enter knowledge institutions. The ENW PPP fund is open to new initiatives that fit within the roadmaps of the top sectors Chemistry (incl. BBE), Energy, HTSM, Agri & Food and ICT.

The project size is at least 20,000 euros: 4,000 euros SME contribution (in cash or in kind) plus 16,000 euros NWO contribution. The project size amounts to a maximum of 50,000 euros with 10,000 euros business contribution, of which at least 5,000 euros in cash, and 40,000 euros ENW-PPP funding.
